The Problem

Wildfires produce devastating environmental and economic impacts they:

  • Discolour drinking water supplies by exposing the peat and increasing Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) into the water supply
  • Release carbon dioxide during burning contributing to global warming
  • Damage unique peat moorland and heathland ecosystems essential for rare moorland and heathland flora and fauna

The Solution....

A national monitoring and detection tool of peat moorland and heathland wildfires by generating products from Earth Observation (EO) data to help:

  • Understand patterns of wildfire occurrence and UK wildfire regimes; and mitigate against wildfire risks
  • Target land management, peat restoration, and reseeding; and model carbon losses
  • Reduce water discolouration and associated costs
